Women's basketball Cookes up win

Emma Cooke's career-high 23 points gave the Britons a big MIAA win

ALBION — On National Girls and Women in Sports Day, the Albion College women's basketball team picked up a much-needed 81-74 win over Kalamazoo College. Senior Emma Cooke scored a career-high 23 points and added three steals.

Adding 10 rebounds to her 23 points, Cooke recorded her sixth double-double of the season. Sophomore Meghan Trewhella added 19 points, while Ava Guilford tacked on 17 points and dished out six assists. The trio combined to go 23 of 26 from the free throw line.

Kalamazoo held the edge early on and took a 36-34 lead into the half. Albion used a thunderous third quarter to retake the lead and swing the momentum into the home team's favor. The Hornets led 51-45 with four minutes remaining in the third, before four straight Trewhella free throws got the Britons to within one possession.

Payton Baker stepped in front of a Kalamazoo pass, going coast to coast to tie the game. On the ensuing possession, Trewhella copied Baker with a steal and a bucket, vaulting the Brits ahead.

As Kalamazoo crept closer in the fourth quarter, Guilford and Khaleeya Cook continued to knock down big buckets for the hosts. Cook added 10 points off the bench and registered three steals.

With Cooke at the forefront, the Britons dominated the inside game, scoring 48 points in the paint compared to 24 by the Hornets.

Albion will host Olivet on Saturday for Senior Day. Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
