Grove City, PA. - The Albion Women's Volleyball team went 2-1 in the Westminster/Grove City Tournament. The Brits beat Waynesburg 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-10) and Westminster(25-17, 25-22, 25-20) on Friday night and dropped their first game of the season Saturday vs Grove City 0-3 (25-27, 22-25, 22-25).
Game 1 vs Waynesburg 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-10)
Margaret Jones,
Emma Pagliarella, and
Carly Frank lead the team with nine kills each.
Molly Edmunds recorded 21 assists and
Paige Williamson added 13 digs. The Brits opened the game on a 6-1 run with two kills by Jones and Frank and an ace by
Bri Whitfield. The Brits would continue to capitalize on the errors of the Yellow Jackets to go up 21-12. The Brits would finish four of the last five points with kills, with
Ryan Garrett sealing set one, 25-15.
The second set would start back and forth, but the Brits would capitalize scoring three points to the Yellow Jackets one. The Yellow Jackets would battle back within one, but the Brits would respond going up 16-8, after two aces by Williamson. The Yellow Jackets would continue to battle but Frank would end the set 25-17.
The third set would be back and forth, before the Brits would go on a 7-0 run, thanks in part to two aces by
Ava Wilcox, to go up 17-7. The Brits offense would continue to roll and Whitfield would seal the game with two aces to win 25-10.
Game 2 vs Westminster 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-20)
Frank led the team with 13 kills and Whitfield followed closely with eight. Edmunds recorded 25 assists and Williamson added 14 digs. Pagliarella led the team with four blocks for the defense. The Brits would start the game 15-5 with seven kills and two aces. The Brits would finish on a 6-2 run to take the first set 25-17, as
Joelle Boeskool would find open court. The second set would be more evenly matched. The Brits would go up three to start the set, but the Titans would battle to keep it close. The Titans would get within one, 17-16, after a few errors by the Britons, however a kill by Whitfield and an ace by Edmunds would give the Brits some breathing room. The Brits would win the set 25-22, capitalizing on errors by the Titans. Heading into the third set, the Brits would open with a 12-5 run, with three kills coming from Frank. The Titans would respond tying the game at 14. Whitfield would record two kills and an ace to put the Brits back up 18-15, however the Titans would look to extend the match, tying it once again at 18. Frank would find a gap and give the Brits the lead and start a 4-0 run to go up 22-18. Wilcox would finish the match with an ace, improving the team to 9-0!
Game 3 vs Grove City 0-3 (25-27, 22-25, 22-25)
Frank led the team with 12 kills with
Carson Howard adding 10, while Edmunds added 16 assists for the offense. Jones led the defense with six blocks and Williamson added 14 digs, followed closely by Wilcox with 11. The first set would start back and forth, seeing eight ties before the Wolverines would get a three point run to take the lead 14-11. The Brits would battle back with kills by Frank and Howard to tie the game back at 16. The game would continue back and forth, with three more ties between the Brits and Wolverines. A kill by Whitfield and a block by Jones would give the Brits the advantage 22-20. A few errors by the Brits would allow the Wolverines to go up 24-22, however a kill by Frank and errors by the Wolverines would give the Brits a 25-24 advantage, however errors by the Britons would give Grove City the advantage 1-0. The Wolverines would come out on an 8-3 run in set two. The Brits would respond going on a 6-0 run of their own to even the game at 13. The Wolverines would respond, going up five to leading 21-16, however three straight kills and an ace by Wilcox would bring the Brits back within one, 21-20. The Wolverines would finish the set, taking a 2-0 lead on the Britons. The Britons would come out swinging, going on an early 6-2 run. The Wolverines would be unfazed and would respond to take the lead 10-7. Two kills by Howard and a block by Jones and Whitfield would give the Brits the 12-11 lead. The Brits would continue to keep a small lead, going up 20-17. Grove City would battle back to take a 21-20 lead. Two kills by Howard would give the Brits a 22-21 lead. However, Grove City would score four straight to give the Brits their first loss of the season.
When asked about the weekend Head Coach Kristin Slamer-De St. Aubin said "Proud of how our team grew this weekend. We saw some adversity and teams with size. Great teams for us to play at this point in the year. We have some work to do next week."
The Britons return to action on Tuesday, September 22nd as they travel to take on the Spartans of Manchester at 6:30 PM.
