Box Score ADA, Ohio - Brett Timmer (Jenison) threw his third career complete game – his first since a 5-1 decision over Calvin College on April 9, 2010 – to lead Albion College to a 3-1 victory over Ohio Northern University in non-league baseball action. Timmer scattered six hits while striking out six.
Ohio Northern scored its run in the second as first baseman Matt Hampshire produced a leadoff double. Timmer retired the next two Polar Bears batters, but left fielder Josh Murphy came through with an infield single to plate the run.
Timmer was especially tough from the fifth inning on as he retired 13 batters in a row while setting the Polar Bears down in order in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Ohio Northern never got a runner past first base once the Britons gave Timmer a 2-1 lead by scoring in the sixth.
"The wind was blowing in so it wasn't a hitters day," Albion coach Scott Carden said. "Brett pitched to contact. He kept the ball down in the zone and let the defense make plays behind him. He was able to place his off-speed pitch for strikes early in the count. He didn't have many three-ball counts which kept his pitch count down and allowed him to stay in the game."
Brendan Diamond (Holt) stole second with one-out in the sixth and that set the table for Chris Kruppe (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) to lace a RBI single to right field. After a groundout, Eric Shimmel (Warren/Cousino) was hit by a pitch and Ben Gould (Alpena) reached on an error to load the bases. Kruppe scored when B.J. Konkle (Marshall) reached on an error.
Albion added an insurance run in the eighth as Konkle's RBI single brought Chuck DeClarke (Holt/Lansing Catholic Central) across the plate.
The Britons finished the game with five hits and they were helped by four Ohio Northern errors and two walks.
