Box Score 2 ALBION, Mich. – Albion College received complete game pitching performances from Mike Schypinski (Sterling Heights/De La Salle) and Kyle Cassidy (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) to sweep a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball doubleheader at Homer Stryker Field by scores of 9-4 and 2-0.
Schypinski allowed two earned runs on seven hits and three walks to improve to 3-1 on the year. He received all the offensive support he would need before he even took the mound as Albion scored five runs with two out in the first inning. Davin Montgomery (Novi/Northville) and John Gignac (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Central) each produced two-run singles in the inning.
Chuck DeClarke (Holt/Lansing Catholic Central) slugged a double and a homerun in the contest. He scored three runs.
Montgomery, Ben Gould (Alpena), and Eric Shimmel (Warren/Cousino) all rapped two hits in game one.
Cassidy yielded singles to the top two hitters in the Kalamazoo lineup, but he struck out seven to pocket his first career complete game shutout. He retired the final 16 batters in order after hitting a batter and issuing a walk to consecutive batters in the second.
Albion had to play small ball to score its runs.
Gignac hit a single to leadoff the third and he was sacrificed to second by Dan Mills and he advanced to third on a passed ball. Gignac scored on a sacrifice fly by DeClarke.
Gould was hit by a pitch to start the fourth. He was sacrificed to second by B.J. Konkle (Marshall) and he scored on Montgomery's single.
The teams will return to Albion's Frank Joranko Field at 1 p.m. Sunday to complete the four-game series.
