Pitchers Silence Spring Arbor Bats

Box Score

ALBION, Mich. – Matt Temrowski yielded two hits over seven shutout innings and Tony Cappelletty produced a career-high three runs batted in to lead Albion College to an 11-1 victory over local rival Spring Arbor University in non-conference baseball action.

Temrowski (2-3) settled in after getting some help from the defense. Right fielder Shane Lindemann made a sliding catch on the bullpen mound to retire Brian Doll in the second inning and first baseman Spencer Bonofiglio fired a strike to home plate to prevent Nick Harris from scoring in the third inning.

Temrowski retired the Spring Arbor batters in order in the fourth and sixth and the Cougars didn't advance a runner to second base in the fifth and seventh.

"Matt has been pitching in league series some, but because of the way the other guys are throwing, he hasn't had a lot of opportunities," Head Coach Scott Carden said. "He threw to contact which is one thing we believe in. The Spring Arbor batters know how to swing it. I'm really pleased about what he was able to do to them."

Albion seized the lead in the third as Lee Madziar drew a leadoff walk and Cappelletty's popped bunt turned into a single. Joshua Fischer and Kyle Kowal produced RBI singles and the Britons led 2-0.

Kowal drew a one-out walk and Lindemann followed with a single in the fifth. Kowal scored when Davin Montgomery's fly ball was misplayed in right field and Bonofiglio stroked a RBI single to left field.

Cappelletty drove in three runs on a pair of singles as Albion scored seven times in the sixth.

"Tony has had some bad breaks at the plate," Carden said. "To have him back in the lineup and have some success is going to help us down the stretch.

"I thought our offensive approach was pretty good," Carden added. "We were fortunate enough to get some key hits."

Spring Arbor took advantage of three walks to plate its run in the eighth inning.

Albion, winners of four of its last five to improve to 14-17 overall, has to wait until April 27 to begin a four-game series with Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Olivet College. The action begins with a 1 o'clock Sunday doubleheader at Olivet and continues with a 2 o'clock twinbill at Albion on April 28.
