Box Score BEREA, Ohio – Mackenzie Novak scored with 17 seconds left in the first overtime period to lift Albion College to an 11-10 victory over Baldwin-Wallace University in non-league women's lacrosse action Wednesday night.
Julie Wood scored on a shot that deflected off the goalkeeper's stick with 37 seconds left in regulation as Albion forced overtime for the first time in the six-year history of its varsity program. Wood finished the night with six points, collecting three goals and two assists.
Albion's late rally capped a game that featured scoring runs by both teams early on.
The Britons scored the first four as Kadie Koolwick, who finished with four goals, scored twice, Wood produced a goal and an assist and Ashley Glenn tacked on a goal.
Jenna Turner scored twice and Victoria Budzyn chipped in with a goal and an assist to lead Baldwin-Wallace on a tear as the Yellow Jackets seized a 7-5 lead with 23:12 left in the second half.
Glenn and Koolwick scored 32 seconds apart as Albion forged a 7-7 tie with 17 minutes left and the teams matched goals from that point.
"Baldwin-Wallace challenged us a lot," Albion Head Coach Shanta Loecker said. "Their stick skills were strong. Things were happening with their sticks that we don't normally see. And it was the most physical game we've played this season, but we played up to the physical style in a smart way."
Victoria Della Pia, Isabel Fontana, Kit Maher and Shannon Kahl led the Britons' defensive effort. Maher and Kahl combined to pounce on six ground balls, Maher was credited with causing three turnovers, and Della Pia continued her consistency at goalkeeper with seven saves.
"Isabel was directive with her teammates and Kit and Shannon were workhorses," Loecker said.
Albion will take a 5-0 record into its home game against Illinois Wesleyan at 3:30 Saturday.
