ALBION, Mich. - Albion College was a swimmer or two short of being able to pull an upset of 13th-ranked Calvin College in a men's swimming & diving dual meet.
First-year student-athletes Jake Burris and Henry Swett dominated the diving events, Sebastian Tostado won three individual events, Derek Bosko won the 100-yard freestyle and Kyle Harvey won the 400 individual medley as the Britons fell by 19 points, 158-139.
Swett, who hails from nearby Marshall, introduced two new dives as he achieved a total of 311.60 on the 3-meter board, a score that was .35 off the school record. Burris, who was the runner-up on 3-meter, edged Swett by 3.55 to win the 1-meter competition. Burris' 1-meter total was 298.90.
"Coach (Eric) Burris has created a good environment in training and Henry and Jake and feeding off each other," Albion Head Coach Jake Taber said. "Things are coming together in the diving well."
Tostado's winning times were 21.87 seconds in the 50 freestyle, 52.35 seconds in the 100 butterfly, and 1:56.07 in the 200 backstroke.
Bosko completed the 100 freestyle in 47.67 seconds for a one-second margin over Calvin's Brandon Muma. Muma defeated Bosko 100 freestyle contested earlier in the meet.
Blake Blair scored second-place points in the distance freestyle events (10:40.41 in the 1,000 and 5:07.59 in the 500) and Gerardo Huidobro did likewise in the breaststroke events (59.33 seconds in the 100 and 2:08.58 in the 200).
"We did well as far as racing goes," Taber said. "I was pleased with how competitive we were."
Albion will swim at home again Jan. 23 when it challenges Hope College. The first event is set to start at 1 p.m. inside the Dean Aquatic Center.
