Box Score ALBION, Mich. – The theme after Albion College's 19-1 victory over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Olivet College in women's lacrosse sounded similar to the slogan of the tag line used by a maker of athletic apparel.
Led by defenders Taylor Nelson and Lauren Wiegand and goalkeeper Victoria Della Pia, the Britons protected their home field by limiting Olivet's scoring chances.
Albion Head Coach Shanta Loecker often talks about redefending, and her team did just that as Olivet was credited with three shots. Nelson caused four turnovers, and Wiegand, who scooped up five ground balls, was one of four Britons to cause two.
Della Pia collected two saves as Albion. The last time Albion allowed just one goal in a game was last season in a 21-1 victory over Illinois Tech.
"It was nice to see the effort they put in," Loecker said of the defenders. "They committed to playing a team came in the game in the midfield."
While the Britons finished with a season-high 19 goals, Loecker added the Britons will have to continue to be stout on the defensive end. Albion had plenty of scoring chances, finishing with 50 shots. Cait Gaitley and Julie Wood produced five goals apiece, and Isabel Fontana, Kadie Koolwick and Ariella Ruiz all had two.
Albion will pause to recognize the senior members of the team – Della Pia, Fontana, Koolwick and Wood – prior to its 1 o'clock Saturday game against MIAA rival Alma College.
