SHENANDOAH, Texas – Seniors Derek Bosko and Sebastian Tostado put the exclamation point on their Albion College swimming careers with an All-America finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay on the final night of the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championship.
Albion rolled up 100 points in the meet, good for 13th place. The Britons were two points shy of the 11th place total set by the University of Chicago.
"I thought finishing in the top 15 would be a reach," Head Coach Jake Taber said. "We scored points every day. It was a fun weekend."
Joined by junior Parker Belmore and first-year student-athlete Len Ciemniecki, the Britons qualified fifth for the championship race with a school-record swim (3:00.12). The Britons were a shade off the record time in the championship race, 3:00.48, to finish sixth.
"What Derek and Sebastian have done for our program – for them to achieve that coveted hardware in the final event of their collegiate careers is poetic," Taber said. "It is a shared experience. It is consistent with who they are and what they have helped up accomplish."
Earlier in the evening session, Tostado gained his third individual honorable mention All-America finish of the meet by placing 12th in the 100 freestyle. He qualified for the evening race with a 44.99-second preliminary swim, and turned in a 45.06-second race in the consolation final.
Tostado's individual scoring included ninth place in the 200 individual medley and 14th in the 200 freestyle. He broke the school record in the 200 free (1:38.88) on Thursday.
Sophomore divers Jake Burris and Henry Swett also accepted their second honorable mention All-America awards of the meet. Competing in 3-meter, Burris' 467.20 score was good for 10th place, with Swett in 11th at 463.75.
Albion's NCAA team included sophomores Nate Kozycki, an All-American with an eighth place finish in the 100 butterfly, and Gerardo Huidobro (honorable mention in the 400 medley relay) and first-year swimmers Tyler Kimbrell and Alec Nyboer (both honorable mention All-Americans in the 200 medley relay).
"We will stay focused on what's ahead of us," Taber said. "What I know is we have talent coming back. We have great leadership with big meet experience."
