Albion rises in clutch time

Box Score

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College let the lead slip away in clutch time against Trine University last Saturday, but it slammed the door on Calvin College in Wednesday night Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action.

Robert Ryan buried a 3-point basket and Juwan Perry added a pair of old fashioned 3-point plays as Albion gained a double-digit lead with three minutes left as the Britons went on to earn an 87-79 victory over the visiting Knights.

Albion has won three straight over Calvin at home and it swept the regular season games from the Knights for the second time in three years.

To get the victory, however, Albion had to overcome an early 10-point deficit. Derrick DeVries produced 10 of his game-high 23 points to stake the Knights to a 19-9 lead seven minutes into the game.

"I didn't think we had a great focus to start the game," Albion Head Coach Jody May said. "We weren't moving on defense and playing with intensity and that led to easy shots."

Jaylin Fordham, Jamezell Davis, Jr. and Robert Ryan hit 3-point baskets as Albion forged a tie at 29. The score was tied at 39 at halftime.

The second half started much like the first with Calvin jumping out to a nine-point lead. Luke Morrison hit from 3-point range to lift the Knights to a 59-50 lead with 14 minutes left.

Perry converted a pair steals into transition baskets as part of an 11-0 Albion run, and neither team led by more than three until the Britons took control in the closing minutes.

Perry finished with a career-high 20, hitting 6-of-9 from the field and 7-of-10 from the line.

"Juwan is talented and he's got a lot of things to his game," May said. "We needed a spark plug to come in and score points quickly."

Fordham gave the Britons a boost off the bench with 16 points, shooting 6-of-12 from the field.

"Jaylin has been our most consistent wing player in the league season," May said. "He doesn't score a ton of points, but he produces in his own way."

Quinton Armstrong and Ryan chipped in with 14 points apiece. Armstrong fell a rebound shy of a double-double.

Ryan Lowe kicked the ball out to the backcourt, and he was rewarded with a career-high six assists. He tacked on seven points.

Albion has an opportunity to finish .500 against its MIAA rivals if it can gain a win at Hope College Saturday afternoon.
