GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – While diver Jake Burris won Albion College's only gold medal Thursday night, the Britons pulled silver medals in the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay events and bronze medals in the 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley to prevent Calvin College from pulling away in the race for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's swimming and diving championship.
Calvin leads Albion by 77 points after the first full day of competition in the meet which runs through Saturday.
Friday events include 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 200 medley relay.
Burris, a junior from Chelsea, Mich., won his third MIAA 1-meter diving title with a score of 509.60. He achieved a regional qualifying score (491.10) during the morning preliminary round. Tai Sims, finishing fifth, also achieved a regional qualifying score (426.15) and Jacob Maurer finished seventh.
Evan Wonner, Len Ciemniecki, Nate Kozycki and Parker Belmore set a time of 1:22.99 in the free relay to improve on Albion's winning time from a year ago, but the Britons finished a second behind the team from Calvin.
Albion could not overcome Calvin's fast start in the medley relay. Calvin got a 48.64-second split in the backstroke, and despite Kozycki's effort to catch up in the butterfly, Albion finished in 3:21.10. Ian Moran, Jake Huttenlocher and Belmore joined Kozycki on the relay.
Mac Robertson scored a bronze medal with a swim of 4:39.65 in the 500 and Belmore did likewise in the 200 IM (1:52.99).
Albion's depth also helped it remain in striking distance of Calvin. Huttenlocher finished fourth in the IM, Chris Breen was fifth in the 500 free, Ciemniecki and Kozycki were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 50 free, with Wonner adding eighth place points and Tyler Kimbrell was eighth in the IM.
In consolation swims Thursday night, Moran was third in the IM and Matt Anderson was sixth in the 50 free.
