Alma tops Albion in MIAA men's soccer action

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College faced an uphill battle after surrendering a goal in the 26th minute and, despite its efforts to score the equalizer late in regulation, it came away with a 4-2 loss to Alma College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's soccer action at Alumni Field.

The Britons trailed 3-2 when Stefan Isaevski finished a Joan Tomas pass from 28 minutes to play.

Micah Cross placed a pair of shots on goal and Joel Zaretti also forced Alma goalkeeper Garrison Mast to make a save in the final 9 ½ minutes of regulation.

Alma generated scoring opportunities early, getting a pair of shots from Noah Canlas. The Scots broke through on a score by Tanner Parrett.

Albion produced the equalizer in the 36th minute when defender Daniel Akhimien got his head on a Micah Cross pass.

It took Alma only three minutes to regain the lead as Josh Stauffer scored.

Alma extended the margin to 3-1 on Benjamin Polehna's goal in the 53rd minute.

Alma finished the scoring on Brian Ganton's goal in the final minute.

Alma finished the match with an 11-10 edge in shots, although shots on goal were 8-5 in favor of Albion. Cross generated four shots on goal.

Albion, 6-5-1 overall and 1-1 against MIAA rivals, will play at home again at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Adrian College.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.
