Starting pitching leads Albion past Kalamazoo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALBION, Mich. – Drew Weaver threw his second complete game of the season and Kellan Huang matched his longest start of the season as Albion College took a pair of Monday baseball games, 11-0 and 9-2, from Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Kalamazoo College at Champions Stadium at Frank Joranko Field.

The victories lifted Albion to a split of the four games with Kalamazoo. Albion, 16-11 overall and 11-5 against MIAA rivals, maintains third place in the MIAA standings with 12 league games remaining. The Britons have series against the two teams tied for the MIAA lead, Adrian College and Hope College, and fourth place Trine University left on the schedule.

Game One

Weaver (3-2) allowed four hits in pitching his first shutout at the collegiate level. He did receive help from his defense.

  • Catcher Jordyn Finney threw out a runner trying to steal second to end the first inning
  • Alex Fultz doubled to leadoff the second inning, but he was picked off on a throw from Weaver to shortstop Joe Turnbull
  • First baseman Andrew Arszulowicz snared a line drive and he tagged the base to double up the baserunner
  • Turnbull started a 6-4-3 double play to get the last two outs of the sixth inning

Albion broke a scoreless game by scoring five times in the third inning. Finney delivered a big blow with a single scoring Justin Charron and Huang.

Drew Olszewski helped Albion add six runs in the sixth when his single scored Turnbull and Riley Stesiak.

Eight of the nine batters in Albion's starting lineup collected a hit. Sean Haddlesey and Huang collected two hits apiece and Olszewski drove in three runs.

Game Two

Albion slugged six extra base hits to support Huang. Huang improved to 4-1 after allowing a run on seven hits and a walk.

Huang helped his own cause by hitting two doubles and driving in three runs.

The other top four hitters in the Albion order all had at least two hits.

  • Haddlesey was 2-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and a RBI
  • Olszewski was 3-for-4 with a double and triple and three runs scored
  • Arszulowicz was 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored and a RBI
  • Finney was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored

Turnbull slugged a double and drove in three runs.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu.
