Box Score ALBION, Mich. - On a day of celebration for Seniors Evelyn Wischmeyer and Emily Bernas, the Britons win their 11th Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association game of the season over Calvin by a final score of 74-71. It was four key free-throws by Albion in the last minute of the game that held the lead and put the Britons on top.
"There was great energy and atmosphere tonight in Kresge. It is always a bonus to be able to get the win on senior night as part of the celebration. Whenever you can take both games from an MIAA opponent in a season, you have to be happy, especially over a good Calvin team," said head coach Doreen Carden. Back-to-back layups by Rain Hinton gave Albion the first four points of the game and contributed to a strong first quarter. The Britons came out strong and took an early 18-10 lead with contributions all around the board. A late surge at the end of the 1st cut Albion's lead to just four. It was ten points by Rain Hinton that helped maintain the edge in the first for the Britons.
The Knights and Britons continued to go back in forth in the second quarter. Every time Albion was able to pull away, Calvin brought it right back to make it a two-point game. This time it was senior Evelyn Wischmeyer's turn to score ten points and help Albion maintain a one-point lead heading into halftime.
It was a second-half that was a mirror of the first. A half of lead changes and short runs by both teams led the game to be close, heading down to the final minutes. Hinton led the charge with 19 points while Evelyn Wischmeyer (14), Elena Welker (14), and Amanda Larson (10) all added double-figures to Albion's victory. Wischmeyer also led the Britons in rebounds and assists with eight and six, respectively. Rebecca Ross provided eight points going 3-8 from the field and coming off the bench for the Britons.
"It is not easy to win these close contests, and I thought we battled hard and was fortunate to get that last run at the end of the game to hold on," said head coach Doreen Carden. Calvin cut the Britons lead to two with 1:34 left after two free-throws from Gabby Timmer and later cut it to one on a three-point basket from Timmer with seven seconds remaining. The Britons were able to hold on after two free-throws from Elena Welker and a defensive stop as time expired.
The Britons are on the road for their last MIAA contest of the regular season when they travel to St. Mary's on Wednesday for a 7:00 PM tip. Albion looks forward to a bye on the final Saturday of play as they will then look forward to hosting a first-round matchup in the MIAA postseason Championships.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.
The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu
