WBB: Comeback falls short in Alma

Box Score

ALMA, Mich. -- A late rally came up short for the Albion College women's basketball team, falling to Alma College, 77-67. The Scots were able to keep the Brits out of reach and nail free throws down the stretch in the non-conference matchup.

Despite missing most of the first half due to foul trouble, senior Rain Hinton led all scorers with 19 points and brought down nine rebounds. She was a tremendous 9 of 10 from the foul line.

Freshman Lauren Reed gave Albion solid minutes off the bench, scoring 10 points. Rebecca Ross added nine points for the Britons.

Albion's turnovers in the first quarter allowed Alma to build a small lead, as the Britons committed seven in the opening period. After one, the visitors trailed, 16-10.

The Britons found a spark midway through the second quarter, as a three-point play by Beth Chick cut the Alma lead to 36-29. Chick's and-one was set up by a beautiful assist by Da'Leshia Davis running the floor in transition. Davis dished out a team-high three assists in the game. The Scots answered and took a 40-31 lead into the half.

With Hinton back in the game, the Britons looked for their senior early and often. Hinton used her strength to get to the foul line and put points on the board with the clock stopped. 13 of her 19 points came in the third quarter.

Chipping away at the Alma advantage, Albion trailed by eight heading into the fourth quarter. Every momentum play by Albion to get them within single digits was answered by a 3-pointer by the Scots. A corner three from Ross brought the Britons to within eight, but Albion was unable to complete the comeback as the final minutes ticked away.

Albion was just 2 of 18 from beyond the arc -- both coming off the hand of Ross. Alma buried eight threes in the contest.

Freshman Daniah Beavers grabbed six rebounds in the loss. Amanda Larson added three steals for Albion.

The Brits slip to 0-2 on the young season while the Scots move to 2-0.

A pair of 18-point scorers led the Scots, including a double-double by Jeny Brandt.

Due to the unconventional 2021 schedule, this game does not apply to MIAA standings. The Britons will have three more contests against conference opponents before league action commences on Feb. 9

As of now, the Britons are scheduled to host Olivet College on Saturday afternoon in the first half of a men's and women's doubleheader. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. As always, the schedule is subject to change and we will keep you updated at gobrits.com.
