A monstrous third quarter lifted the Albion College women's basketball team to a 70-49 win over Adrian College. Winners of four straight, the Britons improve to 7-4 overall, 4-1 in the MIAA.
Sophomore guard Angelina Mendieta scores a career-high 14 points. Rain Hinton chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds. Elena Welker was the only other player in double figures, adding 10 points off the bench. Mendieta's 14 points led all scorers in the contest.
Beth Chick (eight rebounds) and Athena Samson (seven rebounds) both had career days on the glass.
After three and a half minutes of play, Albion had already grabbed an early 11-0 lead. Mendieta, Chick and Hinton all buried threes in the run for the Brits. Adrian worked to cut the Albion lead to three points, but the Britons ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run for a 22-13 lead after one.
The teams battled evenly in the second quarter, giving the visitors a 33-25 lead at halftime.
A trey by Mendieta out of the break swung the momentum in Albion's favor, as they went on to outscore the hosts 21-6 in the period. The explosive quarter pushed the Briton advantage to 23 points heading into the final quarter.
Albion dominated on the glass, grabbing 24 more rebounds than the Bulldogs (60-36). The Brits connected on nearly 40 percent of their 3-pointers, four coming from Mendieta.
