ANGOLA, Ind. -- After nearly a year of waiting, the Albion College indoor track and field team kicked off its 2021 campaign with a good showing at Trine University. Out of four teams, the women's team took second with 113 points, while the men's side finished third with 94 points.
The teams competed in a quad against Trine, Olivet and Adrian. Below is a listing of top eight finishes.
Freshman Avery Campbell shined in her collegiate debut, winning the 60m dash (7.97) and the 200m dash (27.09). She was also part of the 4x4 relay squad that took home first place, along with Alexis McGinley, Colette Askins and Lauren McDowell.
Senior Trevor Knowles won the long jump with a best jump of 6.83m. Freshman Armund Gordon Jr. was just behind him in third place, with a jump of 6.49m. DaMario Chapman (seventh) and Eddie Longmire (eighth) also placed for the Britons.
Senior Marcus Freeman won the triple jump with a jump of 13.21m.
The throwers had an outstanding day for Albion. Kejuan Frazier won the men's shot put with a throw of 15.95m. Albion swept the weight throw, with Xavier Aikens (16.05m) winning the men's event and Anna Albaugh (14.19m) winning on the women's side. Albaugh, a junior, added a third place finish in the shot put as well (11.32m).
"I am really pleased with our performances tonight and even more pleased with each student-athlete's effort and support of their teammates," said head coach Lance Coleman. "It has been a long time between competitions, but everyone shook off the cobwebs and jitters and did well … tonight fills me with a ton of excitement about the rest of the season."
Derelle Murray was third in the shot put (13.53m) while James Mida was eighth (12.06m). Sophomore Mason Darden took fourth place in the weight throw (14.24m). On the women's side, junior Sylvia Upthegrove was sixth in the weight throw and seventh in the shot put. Hollie Ballentine was eighth in the shot put in her collegiate debut.
Senior sprinter Layla Wilks finished second in the 60m dash with a time of 8.13.
McDowell placed third in the 200m dash with a time of 28.35. She was also second in the long jump with a jump of 4.89m.
The men's 4x4 relay team of Jeffrey Davis, Ed Brown, DeMario Chapman and Armund Gordon Jr. was fifth with a time of 3:51.70.
Junior Nathaniel Jennings was sixth in the 800m (2:08.25) and mile (4:51.45) races. On the women's side, Laura Tuttle (2:50.37) and Eryn Lewis (2:52.35) both scored for the Britons in the 800m. With a time of 6:30.06, Peyton Brooks was sixth in the mile. MeganMcCulloch was second in the 3000m run with a time of 10:38.07. Samantha Bieth was fourth in the same event, clocking in at 10:57.12.
Junior Ashley Dubois took second in the triple jump (9.86m). Trevor Knowles added a third place finish in the high jump with a jump of 1.89m.
Jeffrey Davis was seventh in the 60m dash, clocking in at 7.26.
Helena Abbott's time of 1:07.75 was good for third in the 400m dash. In the 60m hurdles Nayaisha Edmond was second (9.95)
"There were some standout performances tonight by Avery Campbell, Anna Albaugh, Megan McCulloch, Nayaisha Edmond and Ashley Dubois as well as Trevor Knowles, Kejuan Frazier, Xavier Aikens, Marcus Freeman and Nathaniel Jennings on the men's side," said Coleman. "But the real standouts were every team who competed tonight … It took a lot for everyone to overcome their nervousness and shake the rust."
The women's team will compete in a MIAA Jamboree on Feb. 19 at Calvin University. The men will be in action the following day at Trine. Schedules are subject to change and as always, we will keep you updated at gobrits.com.
