Olszewski strikes for five RBI in sweep

ANGOLA, Ind. -- After a tough day on Saturday, the Albion College baseball team answered in a resounding way, sweeping Trine University 4-0 and 12-5 on Sunday afternoon. Albion now improves to 2-4 overall on the young season.

GAME ONE: Albion 4 Trine 0

The Britons were able to limit the Thunder to just four hits in the seven inning contest. Albion's first run came in the top of the first. With one out, Olszewski reached on an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Huang laced a single through the left side, driving in Olszewski and putting Albion on the board early.

Sophomore starter Peter Loch wiggled out of trouble in the third, stranding the tying run 90 feet away. Loch went 4.1 innings, allowing three hits while striking out a pair.

Albion got three huge insurance runs in the top of the seventh, thanks to a two out rally. Merolla hit an infield single and stole second. Junior Sean Haddlesey poked a double just inside the right field line, plating Merolla for a 2-0 lead.

One batter later, Olszewski grounded a single through the 3-4 hole to bring in Haddlesey. With two outs and speed on first, Huang lined a two-bagger down the left field line two drive in Olszewski and put the Brits in position to pick up their first win of 2021.

Olszewski earned the save, throwing two innings and striking out five.

GAME TWO: Albion 12 Trine 5

In a nine inning game, the Albion bats finally heated up as multiple players recorded multi-hit games. Trine tacked on a run in the second for a 1-0 lead after two.

The Brits immediately went to work, and with two away Olszewski swiped second. Huang would later drive in the senior with a RBI single to center. Mark Lauro followed with a single to right, and the two advanced on a passed ball. Huang would eventually score on a wild pitch, putting Albion up 2-1.

Albion used a four fun fourth to break the game open. Braeden Emery reached on an error and Ben Coble followed with a double to right center, putting two runners aboard with nobody out. After a groundout, Merolla bunted down the third base line, scoring Emery and tacking on the first Albion run of the frame. Merolla swiped second, and came around to score with Coble on a two run single by Haddlesey. Olszewski added to his stat line with an RBI single to left center, driving in Haddlesey to cap off the scoring in the inning.

In the top of the sixth, Merolla and Haddlesey both drew walks. Olszewski hurt the Thunder pitching staff with a three run home run to put the game out of reach and give the visitors a commanding 9-1 lead after five and half innings.

Two Trine runs in the seventh were answered by two Albion runs in the eighth off a two-run single through the right side by Dylan Perry. Perry, a senior, drove in Huang and Haddlesey, who reached on a walk and an infield single.

The final Briton run came in the ninth when Merolla knocked an RBI double to right center, plating Emery.

Huang (1-1) earned the win, throwing six innings and allowing just one run.

The Brits will travel to Grand Park in Indiana on Saturday to face off against Calvin and Olivet. FIrst pitch against Calvin is slated for 11 a.m.
