Box Score 2 OLIVET, Mich. -- After a disappointing split on Saturday, the Albion College baseball team swept Olivet College, 6-3 and 14-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Britons improve back to .500 at 7-7, 3-1 in the MIAA.
GAME ONE: Albion 6 Olivet 3
Albion got off to a hot start, striking for two runs in the first inning. Sean Haddlesey and Drew Olszewski led off the game with back to back singles. Freshman Matt McGann was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with one out for Mark Lauro. Lauro delivered a two run single to right, driving in Haddlesey and Olszewski.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Comets touched up starter Braeden Emery for one run. The freshman earned the win on the bump, throwing a complete game, allowing just one earned run while striking out five.
Desperately needing insurance runs, Albion broke through for a 4-spot in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third with one out, Andrew Arszulowicz rolled over a grounder to second, bringing in Kellan Huang who led off the frame with a single.
Justin Charron walked and Dylan Perry was hit by a pitch, extending the inning for Zac Gray. The sophomore lined a single to right center, and an errant throw allowed all three runners to score for a 6-1 lead.
Olivet's two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning would be all they would get in the frame.
Haddlesey and Gray each had two hits in the game.
GAME TWO: Albion 14 Olivet 0
The Britons got six runs in the first and never looked back, cruising to a win in the nightcap. Similar to game one, Haddlesey and Olszewski led off the game with back to back singles, and each advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch. Huang continued his tear, driving in Haddlesey with a single for a quick 1-0 lead.
McGann, who had a remarkable day on Saturday, kept up his hot hitting with a RBI single to plate Olszewski. With one out, an Arszulowicz single scored Huang and pushed the lead to 3-0. Charron followed by driving a two run double to left, bringing in Arszulowicz and McGann. Two batters later, the Brits got their final run of the inning with a RBI double off the bat of Gray.
Albion tacked on a run in the third with a single to right off the bat of Haddlesey.
After adding two runs in the sixth, the final five Albion runs came in the seventh. Hits by Charron and Patrick Merolla made for an opportunity for Alex Cull. Cull smoked a double to left center, driving in both runners.
With two runs scoring off errors, the final Albion run was a sac fly by Lauro.
Teddy Hirschfield earned the win, throwing six innings of shutout ball. He struck out seven and walked none.
Albion will host Adrian College on Friday for a doubleheader. Game times are at 2 and 4 p.m.
