MLAX rattles Alma, improves to 2-0

Box Score

ALMA, Mich. -- Boosted by two 9-goal quarters, the Albion College men's lacrosse team exploded for 23 goals in a 23-6 win at Alma College. Junior Jace Conley led the Briton offense, scoring six goals and recording three assists. Sam Puzevic -- the reigning MIAA Player of the Week -- scored six goals and tallied one assist.

Sophomore Eddie Symons added a hat trick and dished out three assists, while picking up nine ground balls. Defender Joey Tatar caused a career-high seven turnovers and picked up eight ground balls.

Albion improves to 2-0 on the young season while Alma slips to 1-4.

It took Albion nearly 10 minutes to score their first goal. After falling behind 1-0, Conley connected with Puzevic to even the game at one. Two minutes later, freshman Brock Yabs scored an unassisted goal to put the Brits ahead. Following an Alma goal, Conley gave the visitors the lead back with 11 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The offense erupted for four goals in the first three minutes of the second quarter. A Puzevic goal was followed by man up scores from Conley and Ethan Rottell. Symons added his first goal of the afternoon, giving Albion a 7-2 lead.

Midway through the second, Caleb Kropp found Puzevick for the eighth Albion goal. Freshman Timmy Salinas netted a man up goal with 7:08 before the half off a feed from Puzevic. Less than a minute later, Eric Fraeyman scored his first goal of the season. Goals from Puzevic and Symons capped off the Briton scoring in the half, taking a 12-3 lead into the break.

70 seconds into the second half, Conley added his fourth goal of the day. Tatar followed with his first collegiate goal on a man up opportunity. Albion scored the next five goals of the period, including three by Conley, to push the visitors ahead 19-3. Two Alma goals were answered by a pair of Seth Repkey goals, both assisted by Symons.

In the fourth, Puzevic and Fraeyman tallied goals, securing the easy victory for the Britons.

Junior goalie Jack Gogonis (2-0) recorded 10 saves and picked up an assist in the win.

Albion was near-perfect on the clear (17 of 19). They were also a perfect six for six in man up opportunities. The Brits locked down defensively, allowing Alma to score on just one of seven man up opportunities.

"We wanted to get out there and knock some more rust off, and we did that" said head coach Jake DeCola. "Jace and Sam were solid and I also though Jack was awesome between the pipes ... I give a lot of credit to our seniors for the win."

The Brits outshot Alma, 55-32.

Albion will have 10 days off before their next contest, when they travel to Aurora University. First face off is scheduled for 5 p.m. EST.
