Despite a late run from Kalamazoo, the Albion College women's lacrosse team gritted out a 14-10 win over the Hornets in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament. The No. 4 seeded Britons will face No. 1 St. Mary's in the next round.
Junior Chrystelle Lopez finished with four goals and four assists and caused five turnovers. Carly Schwarz added two goals and three assists in the win.
With 21 saves, junior Alexis Robin set the new single-game save record with an unbelievable game in goal.
After 10 minutes of play, Albion held a slim 2-1 lead thanks to goals from Destiny Okon and Ashley Iglesias. Albion tacked on four more goals in the half -- two from Lopez and one each from Okon and Addie Pastor to hold a 6-2 edge at halftime.
The Britons scored three goals within the first five minutes out of the half. Two Okon goals coupled with a nifty goal from Abby Sheklow pushed Albion's lead to 9-3. With 20 minutes remaining, the Brits were holding a 12-4 lead.
Kalamazoo began their comeback with back to back goals, cutting the Albion lead to six. Another goal by Sheklow briefly halted the momentum, but the Hornets rattled off four straight, cutting the score to 13-10.
With 3:14 on the clock, Schwarz answered with an unassisted insurance goal to cap off the scoring.
With 86 points, Lopez now holds the single-season points record with at least one game to tack on.
Albion will face the No. 1 seed St. Mary's on Wednesday in Indiana. An official game time is still TBD.
