Box Score OLIVET, Mich. -- It may have taken a while, but the Albion College football team can officially themselves the MIAA Football Regular Season Champions. In a 35-7 blowout win over Olivet College, Albion caps off the 2021 spring season with a perfect 3-0 record.
KEY STATS
Jack Bush was an efficient 29 of 40 for 349 yards and two touchdowns with no intercep0tions.
Sophomore Andrew Durand had a career day, hauling in 11 catches for 174 yards.
Jackson Cooney was a perfect 5 of 5 in extra point attempts.
Defensively, Jeremiah Major and Donovan Slates led the Britons with seven tackles each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After going scoreless in their first drive, Albion needed just three plays to score on their next possession. Bush found Durand for 56 yards before being forced out of bounds. Two plays later, Philip Jones-Price scored his first touchdown of the day, this one from 20 yards out, giving the Britons a 7-0 lead midway through the first. Cooney's PAT capped a 3-play, 80-yard drive that spanned just 59 seconds.
Another long scoring drive helped the Britons boost their lead to 14-0. On a 4th and 4 at the Olivet 49, the Britons opted to punt, but an Olivet penalty gave the visitors a first down and new life. On the second play of the second quarter, Ryan Roberts found the end zone from three yards out to double Albion's lead.
On the ensuing Albion possession, the offense went right back to work. A 10-play, 87-yard drive ended when Bush connected with Justin Thomas in the corner of the end zone with 5:44 left in the first half.
The Britons ate clock and closed out the quarter with their fourth touchdown of the half. Another Bush to Thomas pass followed by a Cooney PAT pushed the Briton lead to 28-0 at halftime.
With the ball out of the half, Albion scored for the final time, thanks to another rushing touchdown by Jones-Price.
Olivet's touchdown came late in the fourth quarter.
Albion held Olivet to a mere 38 percent (5 of 13) on third down conversions.
Despite the shortened season, the Britons won all three of their scheduled contests, outsourcing their opponents, 111-67, and outgaining their opponents by nearly 400 yards.
In just three games, Bush threw for 1,077 yards and eight touchdowns. Jones-Price ran for over 100 yards and four Albion receivers registered over 100 yards. Kolby Canfield led Albion with 308 yards, while Durand (246), Thomas (208) and Ryan Nolan (104) all added to the depth chart.
Defensively, Slates led the team with 26 total tackles. A catalyst in the Albion interior, Slates added 3.5 TFL, including two sacks.
