Baseball slips in tournament opener

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Late runs cost the Albion College baseball team in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament, falling 4-2 to Calvin University. The Knights scored a pair of runs in the eighth to tack on insurance runs for the win.

Calvin got on the board first in the first inning via sac fly.

In the fourth, Albion scored its first run of the game. Kellan Huang reached on an error to lead off the frame, and two batters later, came around to score on a triple from Braeden Emery. Emery's triple evened the game at one heading into the bottom of the fourth.

The Knights regained the lead in the sixth, scoring an unearned run off Albion starter Kevin Korte.

Calvin scored twice in the eighth to build the lead to three runs.

Looking to extend the game, Andrew Arszulowicz smacked a one-out single in the ninth before being lifted for pinch runner David Asmar. Mark Lauro drew a walk, and with two on, senior Dylan Perry's pinch hit RBI single cut the lead in half. The Knights were able to limit further damage, inducing a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

Korte fired eight innings, scattering six hits and allowing three earned runs.

Emery and Arszulowicz were the only Britons with a multi-hit game.

With the double elimination in play, the Brits will face off against Trine University in an elimination game on Thursday. First pitch, hosted by Hope College, will be at 1 p.m.
