Box Score HOLLAND, Mich. -- After two insane comebacks on Thursday, the Albion College baseball team could not complete a third, falling to Hope College, 24-14, in the MIAA Tournament. With the loss, Albion's season comes to a close.
Albion slugged 21 hits in the contest -- nine of which were for extra bases. Hope tallied 23 hits and scored in all but one inning to hold off the Britons.
Drew Olszewski led the way with four hits. Sean Haddlesey and Matt McGann recorded three hits apiece, while Patrick Merolla drove in a team-high three RBI.
Albion's first run came in the bottom of the first when McGann singled home Olszewski, who roped a double to center.
In the third, Albion tacked on a pair of runs. Haddlesey doubled to lead off the frame and Olszewski followed with a single. With runners at the corners, Kellan Huang lifted a sac fly to left, scoring Haddlesey. Four batters later, senior Andrew Arszulowicz drew a bases loaded walk for Albion's second run of the inning.
An infield single by Merolla in the fourth was followed by a two-bagger from Haddlesey. Merolla later came around to score on another infield single, this one from Olszewski. Doubles by McGann and Zac Gray in the fifth pushed across another run for the Britons.
With the bases loaded in the seventh, Merolla's sac fly brought home Alex Cull, who was hit by a pitch to start the frame. A fielding error by the Flying Dutch allowed another run to come across for Albion.
Justin Charron drew a walk in the eighth and came around to score when Braeden Emery crushed a no-doubt home run to right center. Singles from Cull and Dylan Perry put two runners aboard, and Merolla did the job with an RBI groundout.
In the top of the ninth, Tristan Ellis took the mound, and after an injury-plagued season, struck out the final batter of his career.
Albion added four more runs in the ninth. A two-run double from Mark Lauro was followed by an RBI single off the bat of Cull. The final run came to sore on a Hope error.
The loss concludes the careers of Huang, Cull, Olszewski, Perry, Ellis and Arszulowicz -- all who had remarkable careers during their time with the Britons.
