Baseball edged out twice by Knights

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Albion, Mich. -- In the regular season finale, the Albion College baseball team dropped two one-run decisions at the hands of Calvin University. The Knights took the opener, 4-3, before falling in extras, 8-7, in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Calvin 4 Albion 3

With one away in the first, Drew Olszewski lined a single up the middle and moved to second on a groundout. Freshman Matt McGann drove home the senior with a single to center, giving the Britons a 1-0 lead after one.

Wild pitching hurt the Britons, as Calvin scored three runs on just two hits in the top of the third. More damage could have been done, as the Knights left the bases loaded. Teddy Hirschfield did a nice job in relief, getting the final two batters of the frame to strikeout and eliminate further damage.

Patrick Marolla legged out an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch in the fifth. A two out single off the bat of Olszewski cut the deficit to one run.

Calvin tacked on a run in the sixth, but the Britons had an answer in the home half of the inning. Mark Lauro slapped a pinch hit single through the right side and moved to second on an infield single off the bat of Braeden Emery. With two away, senior Andrew Arszulowicz's opposite field single drove in Lauro, bringing the Brits within one run. Albion left two runners on in the frame, including the tying run in scoring position.

A two-out single would not produce a run, as the Britons could not tie the game in the seventh.

GAME TWO: Calvin 8 Albion 7 (9 innings)

Calvin put up a five spot in the top of the first and added one in the third, creating a large lead early on.

Albion scored a pair in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run single by Olszewski. The senior drove in Merolla and Dylan Perry, as Albion trailed 6-2 after three. Another RBI by Arszulowicz cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fourth.

After a Calvin run in the fifth, the Britons erupted for four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Kellan Huang led off the inning with a single, and McGann followed with a base knock of his own. With one away. Senior Alex Cull's single to right coupled with a throwing error allowed Huang to score and cut the deficit to three runs.

After a pitching change. Arszulowicz greeted the new Calvin pitched with a single through a drawn in infield, plating both Cull and McGann.

A two-out single by Merolla tied the game at seven heading into the seventh.

The Knights scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth courtesy of a sac fly.

Albion concludes the regular season with an 11-25 record, 7-19 in the MIAA. The Britons will await seeding to determine location and time of next week's MIAA Tournament, which is set to begin on Wednesday.
