Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Checkmate: MLAX controls Knights

ALBION – With complete control for the final three periods, the Albion College men's lacrosse team earned a 16-6 win in their MIAA opener over Calvin University. The Britons (8-3, 1-0) rattled off a string of seven straight goals to distance themselves and pick up a crucial win.

Prior to the game, the Brits honored their six seniors – Grant Chaffee, Gerald Haadsma, Bear Nelson, Joey Tatar, Jack Gogonis and Jace Conley

Just 30 seconds into the contest, Conley – the NCAA leader in goals – netted his first of the evening on an unassisted score. A few moments later, freshman Brendan Mercier added to the scoring off a feed from Ethan Rottell for a 2-0 lead.

Calvin scored the next three, but the Brits battled back as a rebound bounced right back to Haadsma, who fired a shot past the Calvin goalie to tie the game at three. Less than a minute later, Sam Puzevic scored off a pass from Haadsma to give Albion the lead for good. Another goal by the junior lifted the Britons ahead 5-3 after one. Puzevic led all scorers with five goals.

Albion opened the second quarter in total control, getting goals from Rottell, Mercier, Conley and Fabrizio Raciti. A goal from the Knights did not stop the Albion momentum, as Gage Thrall immediately answered with his second goal of the season. He later assisted on a goal to Puzevic, as Albion took an 11-4 lead into halftime.

The scoring was silenced until midway through the third, when Puzevic connected on a man-up goal from Brock Yabs. Puzevic and Conley each added one more goal in the third, putting the Britons up by double digits with one period to play.

Albion's final goals came from Haadsma and Timmy Salinas

Thrall had a career night defensively, causing eight turnovers. Tatar (4) and Will Tessin (5) each caused multiple turnovers in the win.

Gogonis (2-0) picked up the win in goal, making 16 saves for the Brits.

The Knights committed 41 turnovers. Albion took advantage of man-up opportunities, connecting on four of eight.

On Tuesday, the Britons will play a redemption game of last year's MIAA Championship when they travel to Hope College. First face off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
