Track and field sends four to Nationals

GENEVA, Ohio – OH .. I-O.

Following last chance meets and climbing numbers, four members of the Albion College track and field team have qualified for the DIII Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, to be held May 26-28. Mason Darden, Elena Welker, Anna Albaugh and Derrelle Murray all punched their tickets after finishing in the top 22 nationally in their respective events.

Darden ranks 17th in the hammer throw, currently entering with a season-best mark of 55.94 meters. The junior took second at the MIAA Championships in the event, while also setting a school record in the hammer at the GVSU Last Chance Meet.

After a week full of PRs, Welker qualified in the heptathlon. With 4351 points, the junior ranks 20th nationally heading into the championship meet. At last week's North Central Last Chance Meet, she had personal bests in shot put, 100 meter hurdles, javelin and 800 meter run.

The 2022 MIAA Outdoor Field MVP Albaugh qualified in the hammer throw. The Albion record holder in the event, the senior will have the opportunity to finish her career on the biggest stage. Albaugh placed second in the hammer at the MIAA Championships and sits 22nd.

Murray, the MIAA Champion in shot put, will represent the Britons as the third thrower at Nationals. With a mark of 15.81 meters, Murray has qualified, ranking 22nd nationally.

Welker will compete Thursday and Friday in the heptathlon. Murray will compete Friday, while Darden and Albaugh are slated for Saturday. The full schedule for this week's events can be found here.
