Western equestrian starts season on high note

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – After a successful 2021-22 season, the Albion College western equestrian team picked up where they left off, placing third in both of their shows on Sunday afternoon. It was the first show day for the western team this season.

Marty Cash won High Point Rider in the morning show. Cash won Open Reining and took third in Open Horsemanship. Also competing in those events was Aria Morgan, finishing third in Open Reining and sixth in Open Horsemanship.

After an incredible freshman campaign, Jenna Smith was back performing at a high level, placing second in Rookie B Horsemanship. In the second section of the event, Anastasia Kiser finished fifth.

In Level I Horsemanship, Madison Brilley and Karragen Roe went 1-2 for the Britons. In the other section, Aubrey Kruske (fifth) and Ainslie Schlagel (sixth) represented Albion.

Emily Brooks competed in Rookie Horsemanship. The sophomore finished second in her division.

Robert Warwick took fifth in Level II Horsemanship while Miley Phillips was just behind in sixth. Warwick later placed third in Level II Ranch Riding as Carli Kerns was fifth.

Junior Aria Morgan started the afternoon show off on a high note, winning Open Reining. Cash was fourth in the event. In Open Horsemanship, Cash and Morgan took fourth and fifth, respectively.

Albion saw five riders place in Level I Horsemanship. In the first section, Kruske and Roe were second and fourth, while Smith, Schlagle and Amelia Otten went 2-3-4 in the second section.

Kerns took home second place in Level II Ranch Riding and sixth in Level II Horsemanship in the afternoon show. Also competing in Level II Horsemanship was Phillips (second) and Warwick (fourth). Warwick added a fifth place finish in Level II Ranch Riding.

In Beginner Horsemanship, Emily Brooks finished third. Kiser ended the day taking fourth in Rooke B Horsemanship.

On Saturday, the Western team will have a home show.
