Men's wrestling has successful weekend in Iowa

PELLA, Ia. – Coming down to the heavyweight match, CJ Krum lifted the Albion College men's wrestling team to a win, as the Brits split a pair of duals on Friday evening. In the opener, the sophomore won the final bout to give Albion a 22-19 win over Schreiner University. Taking on No. 11 Central in the second dual, the Britons fell 24-12.

In the Schreiner match, Cade Odrobina started the day with a 9-1 win for the Brits at 125. Following it up at 133, freshman Austin Matheney picked up four points with a 12-2 win.

Schreiner won the next two bouts before Peyton Brooks gave Albion a much-needed five points. The freshman earned a tech fall victory in 4:50. At 165, Chris Mills won by a 7-1 decision, before Jack Smith gritted out a 7-5 win at 174.

Sophomore Bode Brown tied the match at 19 in the 197 matchup, picking up his second pin of the season. That left the match in the hands of the heavyweight bout, and Krum delivered. A 3-1 victory sealed the weekend opening win for the Britons.

In their second match, Albion faced off against No. 11 Central College. The Dutch won the first four matches to hold a big lead early on. At 157, Brooks picked up his second win of the day – a 9-3 decision.

Central went on to take the next two weights, before the highlight of the match came at 184. Sophomore Owen McDaniel took down the No. 9 ranked wrestler at 184, pinning him in 5:00. Krum picked up another win at 285.

On Saturday, the Brits resumed action at the Under Armour Invitational, hosted by Central. At 125, Cade Odrobina went 2-2 finishing sixth overall. The freshman earned both his wins via major decisions.

Austin Matheney went 3-1 at 133, becoming the consolation champion. En route to the title, Matheney had a tech fall and a major decision.

Max Honiss was 1-2 at 149 with a pin in 3:36.

Thomas Potter placed sixth at 157, finishing the day with a 2-2 record.

Junior Chris Mills was 3-1 and the consolation champion at 165. One of his three wins was a pin, coming in 1:13.

McDaniel was 2-2, placing fourth overall at 184. The sophomore had a dominant 18-3 tech fall victory along the way.

At 285, two Brits competed – Owen Miller and Benoit Richards. Miller was second, dropping a tough 3-2 decision in the finals. He started the day with a pin in just 19 seconds. Richards was 1-2 overall.

Albion will travel to Olivet College for a dual match on Jan. 19, beginning at 7 p.m.
