Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Revenge. WBB avenges Alma loss, advances to Semis

Lolo Reed dropped 18 points in front of a gym full of Kresge Krazies.

ALBION – Revenge Tour 2023 edition goes to the Brits.

In front of a packed and raucous Kresge Gymnasium, the Albion College women's basketball team prevailed in a gritty 68-60 win over Alma College. The No. 4 seeded Britons advance to the MIAA Semifinals on Friday when they will take on Hope College.

Last season, the Scots upset Albion in front of their home crowd in the first round. Led by an 18-points night from Lolo Reed, the Britons assured themselves deja vu was not in the cards.

In addition to Reed, three other Britons finished in double figures. Daniah Beavers collected yet another double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Riley Davis added 11 points while Elena Welker chipped in with 10.

Filled with Britons from almost every team on campus, the Scots looked unfazed in the early parts of the game. Backed by a 50 percent 3-point effort from Alma, the visitors held a small 18-14 lead after one.

Albion rallied in the second quarter, scoring the first eight points of the period. A transition bucket from Welker, a jumper by Audrey DeWaters and a trey by Davis pushed the hosts ahead, 21-18. Alma was ready to respond, hitting a three at the other end and halting the Albion momentum. Throughout a back and forth quarter, a jumper from Cierra Cole lifted Albion in front at the half, 31-30.

Similar to the second quarter, Albion started the fresh half on a 9-0 run. The Scots immediately punched back with a 10-0 run of their own, taking a 40-39 lead midway through the third. A triple from Alma in the final minute tied the game at 46, setting up a photo finish in tournament play.

Davis buried a three to start the fourth, giving the Britons the lead for good. Albion's biggest swing came midway through the period. Reed drove hard to the basket and was fouled, setting up a traditional three-point play opportunity. Despite missing the free throw, the Brits drew a foul on the rebound and got the ball right back. Davis knocked down a 3-pointer from the wing, pushing Albion ahead 60-51.

Down the stretch, Beavers converted big-time free throws with 33 seconds remaining to give Albion a six point lead. With 20 seconds on the clock, Cole – a fifth year senior – calmly sank a pair of free throws to ice the game and give Albion a rematch with Hope.

With Reed and Beavers doing a majority of the damage, the Britons outscored Alma in the paint, 48-14.

Cole finished with a game-high five assists. Albion collected 14 offensive rebounds, with Beavers recording seven.

The Brits improve to 17-9 on the year. The loss end's Alma's season with a 10-16 campaign.

On Friday, the Britons will head to No. 1 seed Hope College for a 7:30 p.m. tip off. Albion split the season series with the Flying Dutch.
