Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Winning ways continue for women's basketball

Cierra Cole led the Britons with 14 points

ALBION – In their non-conference finale, the Albion College women's basketball team used a complete team effort to fend off Defiance College, 70-57. Albion jumped out to a 22-9 lead after one and was able to hold on to win their third straight contest.

Fifth year Cierra Cole led the way with 14 points, bolstered by three 3-pointers. She added four assists in the win as well. Lolo Reed tacked on 12 points, six rebounds and five assists. Both Becca Ross and Riley Davis scored 11 points in the win, with Davis going a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc.

MIAA Athlete of the Week, Daniah Beavers, was the other Briton in double figures, scoring 10 points and blocking three shots.

Leading 10-7, Beavers kicked the ball out to Ross who buried a trey to give the Brits momentum early on. On the next possession, the senior was fouled and sank both free throws for a 15-7 advantage. Albion received back to back 3-pointers from Cole and Elena Welker to build a  commanding 21-7 lead late in the opening quarter.

One minute into the second quarter, Davis knocked down a triple from Cole to give the Britons a 27-13 advantage. 90 seconds later, the junior hit another from long before Ross added another three to her night. Midway through the second, Albion led 33-13.

Defiance used some clutch 3-pointers in the second half to slowly chip away at the lead, but the Brits had built a large lead early on and were able to score in transition to limit the damage.

Albion dominated inside, outscoring the Yellow Jackets in the paint, 34-12. The Britons forced Defiance to commit 18 turnovers, leading to 15 points for the hosts.

The Britons shot 48 percent from the floor, including a season-best 56.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Albion improves to 15-7 overall.

On Saturday, the Brits hit the road to take on St. Mary's College. Tip off in Indiana is scheduled for 3 p.m.
