Merian to step down as WLAX head coach

ALBION – After five seasons at the helm of the Albion College women's lacrosse program, head coach Laurie Merian has decided to step down to pursue other opportunities. In her time leading the program, Merian coached the Britons to a 47-26 record with a MIAA Regular Season and Tournament title.

In Merian's inaugural season in 2019, Albion won the MIAA Tournament, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history. She then led the team to a MIAA Regular Season title in 2022, their first since 2016.

"I want to thank my current and past Albion College administrators who helped me lead the teams to our success in the last five years," said Merian. "I would also like to thank Emily DeWaters for her leadership, partnership and overall support to me, our student-athletes and the college at large. Albion s a wonderful place to call home for many young individuals … I will miss my colleagues, student-athletes and the tight-knit community of Albion College. Go Brits!"

Since Merian took over, 21 players have earned All-MIAA status. She coached a number of impactful players during her tenure, including Albion's all-time leading scorer in Chrystelle Lopez. In 2022, she led Lopez and goalie Alexis Robinson to a sweep of the MIAA MVP Awards, with Lopez taking offensive honors as Robinson was recognized as the defensive player.

"Coach Merian led our women's lacrosse program to regular success on the field and beyond," said Director of Athletics, Todd Hibbs. "We are grateful for all that she has done for Albion College, our athletic department, and specifically for the women in our lacrosse program these past five years."

A search for a new head coach will begin in the coming weeks.
