Men's wrestling opens season with road win

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – In their 2024-25 season debut, the Albion College men's wrestling team won nine straight bouts to defeat John Carroll University, 38-3. Newly appointed head coach, Tom Hall, earned the win in his Albion debut.

The Blue Streaks won at 125 before Cade Odrobina righted the ship at 133. The junior won by a 10-4 decision to even the score at 3-3. Austin Matheney followed with a big tech fall win at 141, winning in 2:21, 16-0.

Senior Max Honiss grinded out a tough 2-0 victory at 149 to extend Albion's lead to 11-3. At 157, sophomore Justin Gorman gave Albion its first fall of the season, coming in 3:34. Peyton Brooks provided five points for the Britons with a tech fall at 165, 17-1 (5:59). Freshman Zak Knapp won his first collegiate match at 174 over the No. 7 ranked wrestler in the nation. His 6-2 victory helped the visitors hold a 25-3 heading into the final three bouts.

Rounding out the night, Owen McDaniel earned a 13-4 major decision at 184. In sudden victory, Demond Harrison – the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the region at 197 – defeated the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the region, 4-1. Senior CJ Krum ended the night with a pin in 5:45 to send the Britons home with a big time win.

Due to scheduling changes, the men's team will now wrestle tomorrow at the Mount Union Invitational.
