Seven advance to Saturday, five in Semifinals at men's wrestling Regionals

ADA, Ohio – With five advancing to Semifinals, the Albion College men's wrestling team currently sits in fifth place at the NCAA Division III Central Regional. The Britons have 75 points, just 1.5 points behind Adrian. 

Max Honiss, Owen McDaniel, CJ Krum, Peyton Brooks and Demond Harrison all went undefeated on Friday to advance to Semifinals on Saturday. The top three placers from each weight class will earn a trip to the NCAA DIII National Championships in La Crosse, Wis.

SEMIFINALISTS

149: Max Honiss was a perfect 3-0 on the afternoon, starting with an 8-0 victory in his opener. The No. 3 ranked wrestler in the region went on to pin his next opponent in 44 seconds, followed by a 14-2 major decision to secure a spot in the Semifinals. Honiss will have a rematch with the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the region, Tyler Herrema (OLI) tomorrow. 

165: After starting the day off with a 12-2 major decision, sophomore Peyton Brooks earned an incredible 8-6 victory over the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the region, Tyler Bodovetz (OWU). Brooks, currently ranked sixth in the region, will take on Jess Herrera (WAB), second in the region, tomorrow in Semifinals. 

174: A pin and a tech fall lifted Owen McDaniel to a spot in Semifinals on Saturday. McDaniel pinned his first opponent in 4:43 before an 18-2 tech fall in 7:00 was his second win of the day. After dropping to 174, the junior sits third in the region and will wrestle Aidan Ashburn (JCU) tomorrow. 

197: The top seed at 197, Demon Harrison's dynamic freshman season continued with a fall and a tech fall. Harrison started the day with a pin in 4:38 and followed with an 18-2 tech fall. As the No. 1 wrestler in the region, Harrison will face Caleb Tackett (WILM) tomorrow morning. 

285: Highlighted by a tough 5-0 win over another regionally ranked wrestler, CJ Krum advanced to tomorrow with two decisions. Prior to the 5-0 victory, the junior picked up an 8-1 win. It will be a 2 vs. 3 matchup tomorrow in the Semifinals as Krum will compete against Doug Bryne (BW). 

ALSO ADVANCING TO SATURDAY

Sophomore Austin Matheney won his first match, an 11-0 major decision, before falling to the No. 1 wrestler in the region. He battled back to remain alive at 141, with a 15-9 decision. He will compete tomorrow in the consolation bracket. 

At 157, freshman Justin Gorman dropped his first match before rebounding with a 5-0 victory. Gorman continued his first regional trip in the consolation bracket with an 11-1 major decision. He, along with Matheney, will continue their tournament tomorrow. 

Garrett Iobe went 1-2 at 184, highlighted by a pin in the consolation matches. Josh Mars was 0-2 at 133. 

Tomorrow the journey continues for seven wrestlers, eyeing a spot in the NCAA Championships.
