Vining, Bright Lead Men's Track & Field on Day 1 of MIAA Championships

Logan Vining won the 800m prelims on Day 1 of the MIAA Championships. He will look to become the first Briton since 2003 to win the event during the following day's finals.
HOLLAND, Mich. — Logan Vining won the prelims of the 800m, and Cooper Bright placed second in both the 100m and 200m prelims to lead the Albion men's track & field team on Day 1 of the MIAA Outdoor Championships.

The Britons tallied seven team points — all in throws — to end the first day at Hope's Brewer Outdoor Track in eighth with seven points. Calvin leads the field with 68 points.

Vining paced the field with a time of 1:55.14, while Bright's 10.72 in the 100m and 21.69 in the 200m set him up nicely for the finals in both events the following day.

Bright will look to become the seventh Albion runner to win both events at the conference championships in the same season and first since Justin Meredith in 2014. With a victory in the 800m finals, Vining would become the first Briton to win the event since Taurean Wilson in 2003.

Josiah Graddick also punched his ticket to the 400m finals with a seventh place showing in the event's prelims (50.15).

Both of Albion's point scorers came in the shot put. Van Norman took third (14.22m), while Dewayne Williams placed eighth (13.30m) as a newcomer.

Ben Yeasting competed in both hurdles events, placing 11th in the 110m (15.92) and 18th in the 400m (1:01.68).

Karma Evans was 17th in the 3,000m steeplechase (10:49.96), while Connor Clark concluded the afternoon with a 19th-place finish in the 10,000m (36:39.76).

Parker McDonald was ninth in the hammer throw (44.85m), while Wyatt Putney took 11th in the long jump (6.26m).

Maverick Messenger rounded out Albion's top competitors with a 10th-place finish in the pole vault (3.91m).
