Big Innings Send Britons to Baseball Losses

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ANGOLA, Ind. – Albion College appeared to be on its way to taking the first game of its Sunday doubleheader with Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Trine University. The Britons had a 5-0 lead in the sixth, but on April 1 maybe they were fooled into a false sense of security. Trine rallied for six runs in the sixth, and it scored again in the seventh to hand the Britons a 7-6 setback.

Albion was forced to settle for a split of the four-game weekend series – the Britons won the Saturday games at Frank Joranko Field – as Trine gained an 11-1 win in game two.

Brendan Diamond (Holt) doubled home a pair of runs in the second inning of game one. Diamond scored on a single by Davin Montgomery (Novi/Northville), but the rally ended when Dan Mills (Northville) was thrown out at the plate.

Albion tacked on two more runs in the third as Chuck DeClarke (Holt/Lansing Catholic Central) slugged his second homerun of the season and B.J. Konkle (Marshall) doubled and scored on a single by John Gignac (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Central).

Albion advanced runners to second base in the fourth and sixth innings but failed to score.

The Trine sixth started with a bunt single by Ethan Prebynski, but the next two batters were retired in order. The next six batters reached safely as the Thunder took a 6-5 lead.

Albion responded immediately as Konkle was awarded first base after being hit by a pitch. Konkle advanced to second on Ben Gould's (Alpena) sacrifice and he scored on Gignac's single to right field. The Britons were unable to advance Gignac past first base.

Josh Rivera slapped a single to leadoff Trine's half of the seventh and he crossed the plate with the winning run when Steve Cornett laced a single.

Albion also scored first in game two as Montgomery sent a single up the middle. He scored on Konkle's single.

Trine came back with three runs in the bottom of the first. The Thunder also scored three times in the fourth and sixth innings.

Albion will challenge 16th-ranked Adrian College in a four-game series that starts at 2 p.m. Friday with a doubleheader at Frank Joranko Field.
