ADRIAN, Mich. – Albion College batters took their swings against an all-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association first team pitcher for the second consecutive day and the results were mostly the same. The Britons managed five hits off Adam Clements, the MIAA's Most Valuable Pitcher, as they were eliminated from the MIAA Baseball Tournament with a 7-0 loss to Hope College.
Albion had its best scoring chance in the fourth as Chuck DeClarke (Lansing Catholic Central) and Eric Shimmel (Warren/Cousino) slapped consecutive one-out singles to put runners on the corner. DeClarke was thrown out trying to score on a ball hit to third base and the inning ended on a fly ball to left field.
Albion advanced Chad Gromek (Lansing Catholic Central) into scoring position in the sixth on a one-out single and a stolen base, but the Britons didn't come through in the clutch. A strikeout and a fly ball to center retired the side.
Albion starter Kyle Cassidy (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) took a shutout into the eighth. He retired the first batter in the eighth, but ran out of energy as Jon Ponte and Chris Blair slapped back-to-back singles. Cassidy was lifted after 7.1 innings of six-hit ball, but the bullpen wasn't able to put out the fire. Helped by four walks, Hope went on to plate seven runs in the inning.
