Box Score ALBION, Mich. – The calendar says it's 26 days until Halloween, but the Albion College volleyball team thought Friday night would be the perfect time to give Calvin College, the top-ranked team in Division III a scare.
The Britons became the first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association team to take a set from the Knights, and they almost extended the match to five sets. Maggie Kamp proved to be too much to stop in the end as Calvin survived 25-9, 25-13, 22-25, 26-24 to improve to 17-0.
Calvin put on an offensive clinic the first two sets as it hit .500. The Knights pounded 15 kills without an error in the first, and they scored 16 kills against 3 errors in the second.
Calvin appeared to be on the way to the sweep by scoring the first three points of the third set. The Knights maintained an 8-4 advantage when the Britons started to rally. Kristin Yeager, Halle Thom and Caitlin McClorey served aces and, boosted by loud support from the students, Albion believed it could match Calvin point-for-point. Thom produced a kill and McKaila Rose an ace to close the set.
McClorey knocked down two kills as Albion ripped off four consecutive points to build a 8-5 lead in the fourth set. Albion led 12-8 when McClorey scored up her second ace and 15-11 on an ace by Erin Romph. Kamp provided the answer for Calvin, scoring 5 of her match-high 18 kills to carry the Knights to the victory.
McClorey, Lauren Outwater and Rose finished with seven kills apiece for Albion.
Albion will play at home again Saturday when it hosts Saint Mary's College and Franklin College for a triangular. The Albion-Saint Mary's match will start at noon inside Kresge Gymnasium.
