ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Distance runners Paul Lewis and Matt Melvin led Albion College in the Washington University Invitational.
Lewis finished 11th out of more than 100 runners entered in the 1,500-meter run. He reached the finish line in 4:05.22, improving on his entry time by nearly four seconds. Lewis completed what Coach Lance Coleman called "a tough double" by producing a season-best time in the 5,000 meters. Lewis finished 17th out of 118 runners in the 5,000 with a time of 15:09.74.
Another highlight of the 5,000 meters was the personal-records set by Kendall Maddox and John Forsyth. Maddox completed the race in 16:18.81, while Forsyth crossed the finish line in 16:29.82.
Melvin finished 4th and Mitch Clinton 9th in the steeplechase. Melvin reached the finish in a career-best time of 9:36.32.
Zach Cooper turned in the ninth-best time in the 110-meter hurdles. He completed the race in 15.50 seconds.
In the field events, Nick Bertoria continues to improve in the javelin throw. His throw of 39.42 meters (129' 4") was at least two meters better than his previous career best.
Albion continues competition in invitational meets April 6 when it travels to Delaware, Ohio, for the Marv Frye Invitational at Ohio Wesleyan University.
