Albion Ace Denied Victory In Extra Inning

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HOLLAND, Mich. – Mike Schypinski pitched like an ace in the first game of Albion College's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball doubleheader at Hope College Saturday, but he didn't get the result he wanted.

Hope, aided by a pair of Albion errors, plated an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth to send the Britons to a 4-3 setback. The Flying Dutchmen completed the sweep with a 7-4 victory in game two.

Hope scored in the first inning of game one as Tim Bodine greeted Schypinski with a leadoff double. Bodine advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly.

Albion tied the game, 1-1, with it rallied with two out in the fourth. Eric Shimmel singled and stole second base. Shimmel moved over to third on B.J. Konkle's single, and he scored on an error by Hope's second baseman.

Hope got a leadoff single from T.J. Kline in the fourth and he would score as well as Alex Hunt as the Flying Dutchmen did not relinquish the lead.

Albion came back with two runs in the fifth to gain a 3-3 tie. Tony Cappelletty laced a one-out double and he scored when Brendan Diamond reached on an error by Hope's first baseman. Diamond scored when Shimmel hit a two-out single.

Albion had an opportunity to take the lead in the seventh, but it left the bases loaded.

Schypinski, who lost for the first time this season, pitched all 7 2/3 innings. His final line was four runs (two earned), four hits, two walks, and five strikeouts.

Relief pitchers Bob Green and Bill Radatz combined to yield a run on two hits over four innings in game two, but Hope scored twice in the first inning and it added four runs in the second.

Down 6-0 when it went to bat in the third, Albion got a run back as Cappelletty hit a one out single and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Davin Montgomery. Montgomery added two more RBI with a seventh-inning single.

Diamond was Albion's leading hitter on the day with four hits in seven at-bats. He also drew a walk for a .625 on base percentage. Cappelletty and Konkle added three hits apiece.

The teams will return to Albion's Frank Joranko Field at 2 p.m. Monday to complete the four-game series. Bobby Lee, Albion's director of news & sports information, will call the play-by-play for the internet broadcast.
