Box Score ALMA, Mich. – Marie Pregenzer served up aces on consecutive points to give Albion College the lead in the fourth set, and the Britons only trailed briefly at the start of the fifth set as they pulled out a 28-30, 25-18, 14-25, 25-19, 15-7 victory over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Alma College Friday night.
It was Albion's first victory over Alma since taking a three set decision inside Kresge Gymnasium on Oct. 6, 2007.
"We played more consistent with a full team effort," Albion Head Coach Kristin de St. Aubin said. "We passed the ball well which allowed the middle hitters to do their job."
Pregenzer served up a pair of aces, Kayla O'Malley and Taylor Rosenthal added kills and Alma committed a pair of attack errors as Albion surged to a 19-13 lead in the fourth set.
The teams traded service errors to start the fifth set, and Albion took the lead for good on an Alma attack error and a Kate Winter kill.
Winter's next kill gave Albion the serve with a 4-2 lead. Kaitlyn Gilchrist and Pregenzer combined on the block to stake Albion to a 6-2 lead and it pulled away from there.
Rosenthal cracked a season-high 14 kills while hitting .257 (14-5-35) and adding four blocks. Kelsey Gustafson added 11 kills and a pair of block assists.
First-year setter Grace VanDorn finished with 44 assists and 17 digs for her ninth-double-double of the season.
Gilchrist contributed nine kills and 15 digs to fall just shy of a double-double. She also led the Britons with three service aces.
Libero Monica Shuk had a good all-around match with 22 digs, five assists, and a pair of service aces.
Albion, winners of its last four to improve to 7-6 overall and 3-2 against MIAA rivals, returns home tomorrow for an 11 a.m. match Kalamazoo College.
