INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Albion College got knocked down in the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championship Wednesday as the 200-yard medley relay team was disqualified, but it sure knew how to get up on Thursday.
Nate Kozycki achieved All-America status in the 100-yard butterfly for the second time in his career, and he joined Alec Nyboer, Tyler Kimbrell and Len Ciemniecki for an honorable mention All-America finish in the 400 medley relay as the Britons shot up to 12th place in the team standings.
"The story of the day is how well we responded from yesterday," Albion coach Jake Taber said. "We believed we had the speed between the flags, but we needed to do the little things better."
Kozycki moved up two places from his All-America finish from a year ago, coming in sixth. He reached the final by setting a time of 48.45 seconds in the morning preliminary and achieved a time of 48.49 in the evening race.
"Nate is at his best when the stakes are high," Taber said. "His experience of swimming in the NCAA Championship helps because he doesn't get rattled. There is so much parity between the top seed and the 22nd seed."
An exhibit of that parity was the 400 medley relay. Albion didn't expect to score in the event, but it advanced to the consolation race with the 15th-fastest preliminary swim (3:22.60). The Britons moved up to 12th (3:21.91) in the evening.
Albion will have Kozycki and Kimbrell on the blocks for the 100 breaststroke and Jake Burris and Jacob Maurer in the 1-meter diving competition on Friday.
