Women's Lacrosse defends the home field

Box Score

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College rose to the challenge of having to play defense all over the field Tuesday night and it was rewarded with an 11-6 victory over Kalamazoo College.

Kalamazoo goalkeeper Katie Johnson, who boasts one of the best save percentages in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, was on her game early. After surrendering a goal to Taylor Nelson on the first shot of the game, Johnson stopped free position shots by Darcy Muns and Cait Gaitley and Albion led by just a goal, 3-2, midway through the first half.

Johnson finished the night with 19 saves.

Albion broke through with three goals in a 3 ½ minute window – Muns scored twice and Shannon Kahl tacked on a goal – as it gained a 6-2 lead at halftime.

As if Albion needed any more momentum, Jessica Mooney scored on an outside shot with the possession clock winding down for the first goal of the second half.

Gaitley and Kahl tacked on two more goals in the second half as they joined Muns with three each.

Nelson led Albion's defensive effort by causing eight turnovers. According to NCAA stats, only 14 Division III players have caused more in a game this season.

Nelson also scooped five ground balls.

Jordan Church (three) and Mooney (two) also finished the night with multiple caused turnovers.

Rachel Madar led the Kalamazoo attack with three goals and an assist.

Albion (9-4 overall and 5-1 against MIAA rivals) heads to Holland, Mich., on Saturday for a league matchup against Hope College.
