Box Score HOLLAND, Mich. -- Despite a thrilling third set win, the Albion College volleyball team fell in four sets to No. 17 Hope College on Monday evening. The Britons are now 4-2 overall in the condensed season.
KEY STATS
Senior Kate Winter led the attack with 13 kills. Freshman Kaylynne Nicholson turned in another solid performance with nine kills and a career-high 18 digs. Mariah Brenz (15 assists) and Grace VanDorn (12 assists) dished out the Albion offense.
Defensively, junior Jenna Khoury had 11 digs. Chloe Webber had a complete night up front, registering seven kills, six total blocks and four service aces.
Hope rallied to a 19-12 lead in the first set before the Britons went on a 7-0 run to tie the set. In the run, Winter tallied a pair of kills while Jesse Hepner and Olivia Alexander added kills for the Brits. Tied at 19, Hope regained the lead, and this time would not relinquish it, taking the first set by a 25-22 margin.
The Flying Dutch held all the momentum in the second set, taking it by a 25-14 score. The Britons attacked at a .000 clip in the set, struggling on the attack.
Needing a set three victory to keep the match alive, the visitors got just that when Albion pulled out a 30-28 win. The Flying Dutch held a 27-26 lead before an attack error evened the score and gave the ball back to Albion. Another Hope error put the Brits a point from taking the set, but the hosts tied it back up at 28.
Hepner came up with a huge solo block to push the Britons ahead, and on the next Hope possession, a bad set gave Albion the win.
Similar to the first set, Hope stormed out to an early lead before Albion turned a 17-13 deficit into an 18-17 advantage. Three of Webber's four aces came in that stretch.
With Albion leading 21-20, the Flying Dutch went on a 5-1 run to ultimately take the match.
On the night, Albion attacked at just a .110 clip.
The Britons will wrap up regular season play on Friday when they host Trine. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
