Call it a Comeback! (x2), Brits stave off elimination in MIAA Tourney

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HOLLAND, Mich. -- Facing elimination twice, the Albion College baseball team erased a pair of late six-run deficits to sweep in dramatic fashion and advance to the final day of the MIAA Tournament in Pod B. The Brits forced extras in game one to defeat Trine, 9-6. Albion followed with another comeback victory in the nightcap, eliminating Calvin by an 8-6 margin.

Drew Olszewski was phenomenal for the Britons both at the dish and on the mound. The senior was 6 for 11 on the day. He also fired seven shutout innings in relief, allowing three hits and striking out eight in game one and came in to pick up the save in game two.

GAME ONE: Albion 9 Trine 6 (11 innings)

Through four, No. 7 seeded Trine built a 6-0 lead over the Britons. The Thunder touched up starter Ray Keane for four runs and Peter Loch for a pair. In the fifth, Albion shifted Olszewski from shortstop to the bump, and the senior shined in relief.

Boosted by a grand slam by Sean Haddlesey in the seventh, the Britons erupted for five runs in the frame. Freshman Matt McGann led off the inning with a single and advanced when Braden Emery followed with a base knock of his own. With two outs, Dylan Perry kept the inning alive with a single, loading the bases for Patrick Merolla.

The sophomore center fielder got the Britons on the board with a RBI single up the middle, plating McGann for Albion's first run of the afternoon. With the lineup turned over to Haddlesey, the junior crushed a grand slam to cut the deficit to one run heading into the bottom of the seventh.

In the eighth, the Britons tied the game in wild fashion. Zac Gray was hit by a pitch and advanced on a wild pitch and a passed ball. WIth a runner on third, Emery lifted a sac fly to right, driving in Gray and knotting the game at six.

Olszewski wiggled around a leadoff walk in the tenth, stranding the winning run in scoring position.

Albion rallied for three runs in the top of the eleventh. With two aboard, Olszewski laced a one-out single up the middle to drive in the go-ahead run in Merolla. A sac fly by Kellan Huang and a wild pitch provided the Brits with insurance.

Olszewski retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning to send the Brits into the next elimination game. Merolla slugged four hits in the contest.

GAME TWO: Albion 8 Calvin 6

Nearly identical to game one, Calvin held a 6-0 lead through five and a half innings. Albion finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, when the Knights turned a 5-4-3 double play, but a run scored on the play.

Two innings later, Albion scored seven unanswered runs, staving off elimination and securing a spot in the Pod B championship against Hope tomorrow.

It was none other than Olszewski to kick things off for the Britons. The senior led off the inning with a single and moved to third when Huang followed with a base hit. An opposite field single by McGann drove in Olszewski to trim the deficit to 6-2.

With a pair of runners in scoring position, a Calvin error allowed for a third Albion run to cross. McGann came around to score one batter later courtesy of an RBI single by Andrew Arszulowicz.

Aided by three Calvin errors in the frame, the big blow came off the bat of Haddlesey, who drove a sac fly to bring in Dylan Perry and push Albion ahead, 7-6.

Louis Cardinale III picked up the win in relief while Olszewski earned the save.

Albion will play Hope tomorrow at noon in the 2-0, 2-1 game. Albion must win twice to move on to next week's MIAA Championship series.
