FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. — For the first time since 2022, Albion has swept the MIAA Players of the Week awards.
Max Holser received MIAA Position Player of the Week recognition, while
Brendan Schultz won the MIAA Pitcher of the Week award. The last Briton duo to win both during the same week was
Ryker Mazey and current Albion volunteer assistant coach
Brayden Raether.
Holser helped power Albion to a sweep over Trine and help them to a two-game lead for fourth in the MIAA standings that currently puts them in the conference tournament. The freshman provided a clutch three-run blast in the sixth inning of Game 1 last Saturday to tie the score up at 4-4 and eventually led to a walkoff victory in the 10th. During that frame, he recorded a crucial sacrifice bunt that moved
Tyler Murphy into scoring position that later proved to be the winning run. In Game 2 that same day, Holser went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.
Overall in the three-game sweep over the Thunder, he went 5-for-11 with five RBI, three runs and six stolen bases.
Schultz had a career day as the Game 2 starter on the hill for the Britons as they won, 6-0. The junior went a complete-game seven innings, giving up just one hit, no walks and striking out a career-high 11 batters. The one hit he gave up was the only base runner all game and came on the first pitch of the first inning.
Holser, Schultz and the rest of the Britons will have their final series of the regular season against Alma over the weekend. They will play a 4 p.m. game on Thursday, April 30 at Alma before coming home the following day for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. With at least one victory over the Scots and an Olivet and Hope loss, the Britons would clinch a spot in the MIAA Tournament for the first time since 2019.
