Box Score 2 FRANKLIN, Ind. – Kyle Cassidy and Mike Schypinski give the Albion College baseball team an effective one-two punch at the top of the pitching rotation. They combined their talents Saturday to pitch the Britons to 5-3 victory over Franklin College in the first game of a non-league doubleheader.
Albion had to settle for a split as Franklin handed the Britons a 17-3 setback in the nightcap.
Cassidy scattered two earned runs on six hits over seven innings. He struck out seven.
Schypinski allowed a one-out single in the eighth and retired the side in order in the ninth to get credit for the victory. He struck out three.
Trailing 3-2 after eight innings, Albion took advantage of four Franklin errors to plate three runs in the ninth. B.J. Konkle, who led off the inning with an infield single, and Alex Schumaker scored when the Franklin second baseman threw the ball away while attempting to turn a game-ending double play. The next batter, Adam Mazza, provided insurance with a single to drive in Brendan Diamond.
Seven errors hurt Albion's cause in game two. Davin Montgomery laced a two-run single in the third to cut the Britons' deficit to 3-2. Franklin tacked on five runs in the fourth and six in the sixth to pull away.
Konkle finished with two hits in both games. Diamond, who collected two hits in the nightcap, scored two runs in game one. Tony Cappelletty had two hits, including a double, in game one.
Albion will drive to central Florida Sunday as it readies for six games during spring break. The action begins at 3:30 p.m. Monday when the Britons square off against Waynesburg (Pa.) University at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven.
