Schypinski Throws Shutout As Britons Split Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Albion College baseball team's margin of error to earn a berth in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament shrank Friday afternoon as it split a doubleheader at Calvin College.

Mike Schypinski pitched his first shutout of the season to make early run support hold up in Albion's 4-0 victory in game one. The Britons' 4-0 lead in game two evaporated in a 6-5 loss in nine innings in the nightcap.

The split leaves Albion with a 10-12 record in league games. Calvin, currently holding the fourth and final spot for the league tournament, is 12-9. The teams will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday at Albion's Frank Joranko Field to complete the four-game series.

Schypinski, who yielded six hits and a walk with nine strikeouts, improved to 6-1. He dominated every inning except the fifth when he allowed three singles to load the bases. He induced a double play to escape the jam.

Kyle Kowal produced a two-run single in the first inning and Brendan Diamond and Davin Montgomery hit a RBI singles in the second inning.

In game two, Tony Cappelletty lifted a sacrifice fly to plate a run in the second inning. Albion scored three times in the fourth as Diamond drove in a run on an infield single and Adam Mazza produced a two-run single.

Albion's lead evaporated in the bottom of the fourth inning as Calvin's first four batters reached base safely. Jalen Bouma and Ben Wohl both drove in two runs in the frame.

Both teams scored in the fifth. Michael Fischbach slapped a two-out single to score Kowal in the top half of the inning and Bouma served a two-out single to plate the tying run for Calvin.

Bill Radatz and Gunnar Owens combined to pitch three scoreless innings of relief, but Calvin finally broke through with the winning run in the ninth.

Diamond, Spencer Bonofiglio and Montgomery all went 3-for-8 at the plate in the doubleheader for Albion. Kowal was 2-for-5 but he also walked and was hit by a pitch to finish the day with a .571 on base percentage.
