A nine-time letter winner, Ernie played football,basketball and baseball at Albion. He was named second-teamAll-MIAA in basketball in 1927, honorable mention in 1928, andAll-MIAA in 1929. Ernie was a member of Albion's MIAA championbasketball teams in 1927 and 1929, served as Albion's captain in1928, and tied for the league scoring title in 1929. He was also amember of the 1928 MIAA champion football team.

After graduation Ernie taught and coached briefly in theSt. Louis school system in Michigan. In 1931 he began a greatcareer as a teacher, counselor, and coach in the Albion PublicSchools. Ernie coached football, basketball and baseball, startedthe track program at Albion High School, and worked as a footballand basketball official for 25 years. He retired in1972.

Ernie also left his mark on Bay View. He founded the BayView Boys and Girls Club and served as the association's recreationdirector from 1931-1978. The program began with eight students andnow has over 200 students ranging in age from 2 1/2 to 14participating each summer. The Ernie Gray Olympics are held eachJuly at Bay View, and the Boys and Girls Club is dedicated to Erniein recognition of his outstanding service and accomplishments.Ernie resides with his wife in Albion.
