Frank Sebastian had already attained statewideattention for his catching before coming to Albion College. Priorto his senior season in 1902, The Detroit FreePress said of him: “Sebastian is a natural catcherand a natural hitter. Coach Chester L. Brewer terms him the bestcatcher in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. . . .His fielding average is .962, his batting average,.862.”
Frank led the Britons to MIAA championships in 1900 and1901. The spring of 1902 may have been his—and theteam's—best season, with wins over Michigan Ag (now MichiganState), Michigan State Normal (now Eastern Michigan), Northwesternand Indiana University.
After graduation, Frank played semipro baseball for teamsin Jackson and Holland, and later returned to Albion to be involvedin the clothing business. He left Albion for Grand Rapids in 1937,but retained ties to the community through his membership in theAlbion Masonic Lodge. Frank died in September 1967. HisAlbion-connected family members include his daughter-in-law, AudreySebastian, wife of the late James Sebastian, '32; grandsons James,Jr., '62, John, '67, and Michael Sebastian, '69; andgreat-granddaughter, Meg Sebastian, '92.
